13,000 MBBS Seats and 5,800 Post Graduate Seats Added in Medical Colleges of India

To increase the quality of Medical professionals in country, government has decided to increase the number of seats in MBBS as well as in Post Graduate course. Over 5,800 Post graduate seats have been added this year, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Ashwini Kumar Choubey informed. He also told about the centrally sponsored scheme of government for the establishment of new medical colleges along with various district hospitals in 58 districts in 20 states and union territories.

Minimum Standard requirement(MSR) for medical colleges has been initiated to facilitate the setting up of new colleges. These Minimum Standard Requirements includes availability of land,  faculty, staff, bed strength and other infrastructure.

Over 5,800 Post graduate seats have been added this year across medical colleges in India. Choubey replied to Rajya Sabha stating that government’s step of increasing the number of doctors in the country will definitely increase Doctor-population ratio.

There are around 479 medical colleges in the country with an intake capacity of 67,352 MBBS seats. 13,004 MBBS seats have been added in the last three years,” he said yesterday. There are many centrally sponsored schemes to help increase the undergraduate and postgraduate seats in the existing government medical colleges of India, the minister told. Government is definitely implementing these schemes to provide the nation with better health facilities.
